A Year Without Sugar

3/1/2015

About this time last year I was staring at 10 boxes of Girl Scout cookies; I was thinking I could eat 2 cookies and that would only be 140 calories. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) I had a revelation and knew I wouldn’t eat just 2 cookies. I made the decision that I no longer needed or wanted to eat sweets and have that internal fight with sugar. For those of you that read my blog a year ago, you know that I did not “quit” sugar or go on a “diet” so to speak. I just decided I had an unhealthy relationship with sugar and had no need for it. That was a year ago and I can honestly say that I really have no cravings or want sweets.

I am aware that I tend to have an addictive personality and can take the all or nothing route. I do not advocate giving up or eliminating foods but instead eat in moderation; this does not work for me. I realized that sugar created a negative impact on me and my body and I needed to take control of that. The first thing was for me to be completely honest with myself and make the decision that I no longer wanted to be in this unhealthy relationship. So I broke it off and haven’t looked back!

This can be a very scary thing when it comes to facing anything in your life that is holding you back from being your very best self. It may be diet issue, such as giving up soda or junk foods; or it could be a lifestyle change like, dealing with a job you hate or cutting out negative people in your life. Sometimes you have to step out of denial and find what will truly make you happy. All of us want to be healthy and happy and all of us also have obstacles to that. Identifying those obstacles, internal or external and taking charge of them is the beginning of living life to the fullest. All it takes is making the decision of what you want from life and going for it.
