Share The Road

While running down the sidewalk and pushing the BOB stroller with my 3 year old, I started running through a crosswalk while I had the right-of-way, and a car not only almost hit me, but the driver also started yelling at me. If you are a runner or cyclist I am sure you have a similar story.  It is very unfortunate that sharing the road has become such a problem. Many athletes are so fearful of being hit by a car they simply stay inside rather than enjoying their passion.

Some of you local athletes might remember Jared Bynum, who was hit by a car and killed in October of 2012 while cycling in Nocatee. He was training for Ironman Florida. Cyclist death stats for Florida, involving a motor vehicle, are staggering. From 2007 to 2011, there were over 500 bicyclists killed by cars in Florida. Duval County is number six on the list, and 41% were cyclist riding with the direction of traffic. There is definitely a debate on who has the right away and drivers argue that cyclist take up too much of the road. As a cyclist myself, I always side with the rider and also yield to the pedestrians. In case you are unaware of the law; cyclist follow the same rules of the road as motor vehicles do. There is also a 2015 statute, which says that motor vehicles must allow no less than three feet between the cyclist and vehicle when passing.  Of course this does not give the cyclist a right to act inappropriately and completely take over the road.

I really do believe Jacksonville can become a cyclist friendly city.  There are so many cyclists here riding outside on the roads and groups that advocate for cyclist. Together, I believe that we can all create more awareness and that doing so will help motorists, who do not ride, better understand the need for safety and alertness on the roads. I feel that it comes down to two things: paying attention while you drive and respect.  I also think we need improvement to our roads to include more bike lanes. During my visit to Boulder, CO last year, I noticed there were always dozens of people cycling and commuting by bike. There is no reason Jacksonville cannot follow suit and become a great example of what a cycling friendly city should be. So next time you see a cyclist or a runner, remember to please share the road!
